[First published Nov. 24, 2014] In addition to being marched around for two weeks in uniform, the freshmen also got an orientation to campus life under an array of colorful tents in the rain. The middle picture is the view from my classroom window.

Our department also put on a talent show to entertain and welcome them.  I've been thinking about a doing a blog to explain the fashion choices of the Chinese coed. Although I am no fashion correspondent, I am entertained by the variety of clothes and colors on display here. So when I saw this grouping of girls on stage, I saw that they pretty much represented the gamut of coed fashion choices here on campus...

The Chinese coed will display her legs but not her bosom. Now that winter is coming on, mini skirts are giving way to black leggings.

Many girls have experimented with coloring their hair light brown or brownish-red. When the experiment is over, they just grow it out, so many girls have parti-colored hair.

While many girls totter around awkwardly in platform heels....

Some girls favor short skirts, or very short skirts, with platform heels. Tops and dresses often have an overlay of lace and are decorated with pearl-studded collars.  These girls are bare legged in the warmth of September. I haven't noticed pantyhose; black tights are preferred by the girls.

Shirts often sport garbled English and a few, to our surprise, have death's heads and marijuana leaves.

....other girls opt for the comfort of sneakers. Many girls choose to dress more casually in jeans and t-shirts.

A variation on the miniskirt is the short skirt overlaid with a long sheer skirt.

Most coeds keep their hair long and wear it loose or in a ponytail.
